Generating Income and Managing Risk

In this podcast, portfolio manager and head of portfolio management for PIMCO’s New York office, Curtis Mewbourne, explores the following:

  • Emerging market (EM) economies continue to expand at a much faster pace than developed market (DM) countries are growing. Investors should consider broadening their fixed income opportunity set to include assets that can potentially benefit as EM economies grow faster and as DM economies continue to deleverage.
  • Confronting a low interest rate environment can be a challenge for income-oriented investors.
  • Stretching for yield carries risks that could be materialised down the road. Therefore the portfolio management requires a broad-ranging and dynamic approach.
  • Generating income and managing risk: the tradeoff between higher yields and increased volatility
  • While people tend to focus solely on the absolute level of income returns, income investors should also consider potential downside risk and be willing to sacrifice some level of return in exchange for less risk.
  • PIMCO advocates a prudent risk management approach that focuses on high-quality holdings. This is different from managers who combine low and high quality holdings to create an acceptable ‘average’ credit quality.
